About Courtney Patton:

“Courtney Patton is a storyteller.  She’s also a mother, a wife, a producer, a singer, a songwriter, a tour-van driver and a musician as well as a world traveler when she’s out on tour throughout the continental U.S., Canada and  Europe. But to anyone lucky enough to be sitting in the audience while listening to her expansive Texas twang belt out her version of deep and soulful country music, she’s a storyteller. In a musical era in which clichés and bravado are mistaken for bold noteworthiness,  there is something far braver in peeling back highly personal and emotional open-book songs and delivering them with sensitivity and sentiment. Patton does just that. She is the consummate storyteller in her music. Heartache isn’t just described, it is tangibly felt.”

About Chris:

  • It’s not necessarily the song, it’s the story.  That’s how North Louisiana native, now Nashville-based singer-songwriter Chris Canterbury has always approached songwriting.  Getting out of the way of the story and letting it speak for itself has been a guiding force for Canterbury for almost his entire songwriting career, and it’s evident in his latest release, Quaalude Lullabies, that he’s perfected that area of his craft. Instead of waxing poetic over hackneyed issues and tropes, Canterbury eloquently illustrates the complexities of life with a millworker’s vernacular and a hefty southern drawl.

Excited Taylor Hunnicutt and her band will be making a stop at Pono Acres on July 26th. Taylor has a packed tour schedule in support of her new album Alabama Sound. Taylor made a lasting impression at this year’s Mile 0 Fest in Key West. We loved Saving Country Music’s description of her performance: “Taylor Hunnicutt slammed into Key West like a Cat 5 hurricane y’all. Seriously, send pallets of water and FEMA trailers. Roofs were ripped off and faces were melted by Taylor and her band’s full tilt Country rock from Alabama. This ain’t for the weak-kneed and defibrillated. Taylor Hunnicutt is no delicate songbird. She leaves all of it on the stage and then some.”

About Taylor Hunnicutt:

A gritty, soulful southern rocker steeped in country, Taylor Hunnicutt crosses genre lines to give audiences an engaging storytelling experience. Raised in a small rural town in Southwest Alabama, Taylor has found the sweet spot in between Blues, Southern Rock, Country & Americana. She has shared the stage with acts such as Red Clay Strays, Mike and the Moonpies, Jaime Wyatt, 49 Winchester, Them Dirty Roses, Ward Davis and many more. “With a voice that sounds like Stevie Nicks if she had been raised in the Black Belt, Hunnicutt bends genres between country, soul, blues and rock but settles sweetly in the Americana style of Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams or Amanda Shires.” - Michael Tomberlin, Alabama News Center

About The Local Honeys:

Though many artists are defined by place, only a handful of artists come to define the places they’re from. The Local Honeys are Kentucky and Kentucky runs through their veins like an unbridled racehorse. When a master songsmith like Tom T Hall calls an artist “a great credit to a wonderful Kentucky tradition” it’s time to pull up a chair and pay attention. As it pertains to The Local Honeys he was right on the money. For almost a decade the duo (Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokley) have been an integral part of the Kentucky musicscape. They’ve paid their dues, garnering countless accolades and accomplishments (tours with Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, praise from the New York Times) and have become the defining sound of real deal, honest-to-god Kentucky music.

With their self-titled debut on La Honda Records, (home of some of today’s most gifted songwriters; Colter Wall, Riddy Arman, Vincent Neil Emerson) the duo have set forth on a journey to create something true to themselves while pushing the envelope within the traditions they hold dear. Carefully crafted vignettes of rural Kentucky soar above layers of deep grooves and rich tones masterfully curated by longtime mentor Jesse Wells, Grammy nominated producer and musician (Assistant Director at the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State). “Jesse grew up with sisters. He was cut from the same cloth as us and we knew he would understand what we wanted to do.” What they ended up with is the most nuanced, moody, deep-holler sound they have captured to date. “This is the first time we’ve actively gotten to express who we are and where we’re from” says Linda Jean, “The songs on the album speak for us,” adds Montana “they’re about what we know, reflections of us as people. We realized we have the power to add our own narrative into Kentucky music.” Through that realization the two were able to uncover and dissect themes unique to Central Appalachia and in turn their own lives, capturing small moments in time that deliver thunderous results.

Throughout The Local Honeys, the duo demand to be interpreted as creators and storytellers, not just purveyors of tradition. Similarly, the sounds captured within the project cement their place as innovators and rule breakers. Rollicking banjo meets overdriven guitar hooks and blue collar rural grit is met with lush melodies and nimble harmonies; it’s a project filled with juxtaposition and it isn’t by accident. It’s reflective of who they are and who they run with. Wells along with The Food Stamps rhythm section - Rod Elkins (percussion) Craig Burletic (bass) and Clay City, KY’s irreplaceably one-of-a-kind Josh Nolan (guitar) all lent their expertise and signature groove as collaborators during the session creating a fluidity, warmth and cohesion that can only be created through friendship. The project was engineered in Louisville at Lalaland by Grammy winner Anne Gauthier.

The songs on The Local Honeys speak to a new generation, a new Appalachian, the people who understand the beauty, the struggle and the complexity of contemporary Appalachian life. In “The Ballad of Frank and Billy Buck,” Hobbs describes the grace, humor and irony of an aging hillbilly leading up to the final moments of his unjust demise. Or there’s “If I Could Quit,” a song that grapples with the horrors of the ongoing opiate epidemic and the guttural pain of watching a friend deteriorate through addiction. Pride and sense of place runs deep on songs like “Throw Me in the Thicket When I Die,” a love letter about Linda’s family orchard in Central KY. Playful colloquialisms and regional idiosyncrasies also permeate throughout the record as illustrated on “Better Than I Deserve,” a song built around an informal greeting Montana’s Papaw used throughout her childhood. The album is rounded out with “The L and N Don’t Stop Here No More,” (the only cover on the record written by Appalachian royalty and kin to Hobbs, Jean Ritchie) a song highlighting the hardships of post coal communities painting an all too familiar scene of contemporary rural Appalachia. Reflecting upon these songs Linda notes, “Songwriting can freeze people in time like a photograph, preserving little nuances particular to specific cultures and I love that.”

The Local Honeys come from a long line of storytellers, a lineage of strong Kentucky women that aren’t afraid to tell it like it is and their self-titled La Honda debut is proof it’s in their bones. The duo have mastered the art of telling a good story. The narratives and landscapes they weave into song, the deep understanding and love they share for old time traditions, their undeniable charisma and charm, and their blatant disregard to follow the rules make it clear the duo is poised to become not only the defining voices of their home state of Kentucky but the defining voices of a new Appalachia.

About Chris Stalcup:

“In a just world, Stalcup’s name should be included amongst the new breed of artists including Isbell, Simpson and Stapleton who are marrying tradition and truth.”  Eric Risch - Pop Matters

“With a grizzled voice steeped in realism, Atlanta’s Chris Stalcup is one of the best songwriters America has yet to hear. Pulling no punches, Stalcup’s Saturday night songs tug at blue collar heartstrings with honest emotion.” Magearwig - Bucket Full of Nails

“Downhearted Fools” is a ragged rocker that burns with electricity and hard charging vocals that echoes the Drive by Truckers at their most “Saturday night.” Stalcup offers a set of well worn pipes that speak years beyond his album count, giving the artist a sense of integrity and poignancy.” Glide Magazine

About Matt Woods:

"His brand of genre-saving country possesses an authenticity that's earned him the loyalty of fans plus the comparisons to a range of gifted wordsmiths that run the range from Jason Isbell to Charles Bukowski."
-Tampa Bay Times (Tampa, FL)

"Touring and writing songs isn’t a way to make a living as much as it is Matt Woods’ lifeblood.  It's as if he was born with a guitar in his hand and wrote a song about it before his Mother left the hospital...That being said, [With Love From Brushy Mountain] is a perfect second full length album that I believe will catapult Matt Woods to a whole new capacity of new fans--something that is well-deserved for an incredibly talented singer/songwriter and performer."
-Sad Songs Keep The Devil Away/No Depression (international)

There are so many artists, so many songs and albums out there today, for any individual artist to stand out, they darn near have to stand on their head and turn somersaults to get our attention. It’s sad but true, but that’s what Matt Woods does with 'Deadman’s Blues.'"

Kenny Roby @ Pono Acres (House concert)- November 11th, 2022

Excerpt from Kenny’s bio:

“Whatever the metaphors used to describe his artistry, there is no denying that Kenny Roby is an under-appreciated American treasure.  He is a singer/songwriter with an abundance of gifts. Not the least of which is his ability to draw listeners into his world with disarming ease.”

Kenny’s musical career started by fronting a punk rock band that opened for the Suicidal Tendencies, Circle Jerks, Danzig, and Jane’s Addiction while he was in high school!   From there, he formed a band in North Carolina called Six String Drag that ruled the alt-country scene in the Carolinas in the mid to late 90’s alongside Whiskeytown and Son Volt.  During that run, he picked up a legion of well respected musicians as fans.  Steve Earle produced the bands debut album in 1997.   Patterson Hood of the Drive by Truckers and Citizen Cope also consider themselves big fans of Kenny’s music.  When Six String Drag disbanded in 1998, Kenny began releasing solo albums. His latest being the self-titled Kenny Roby that was just released on August 5th.

Kenny put on an incredible show. Super personable with his own unique storytelling style that was both funny and engaging. He had a way with the animals as they seemed to sense he was a special soul. We sure hope to host another show with Kenny in the future.

This was a dinner show and we need to get better about estimating quantities. We served carnitas and gave people the option to use a tortilla or a bed of lettuce. We offered Mexican cauliflower as a vegetarian option. The tomatoes pictured were part of the largest bowl of pico de gallo this side of the Mexico.

This picture was taken during the Justin Wells house concert in February 2022.  So glad, that Wink, our OG cat, was able to convince Chris to bring his band to the Shady Grove stage.  We could not have asked for better weather.  Harmony and the Hunter opened the show.  It was their debut concert, but you’d have never guessed, they rocked.  Love that their lead singer, Marc English, rocked the Stalcup shirt for his performance.  No Pono Acres concert would be complete without a musician on horseback.  Chris’s back was acting up so he volunteered Nathan Green, his keyboardist, to take the honors.  Chris and the band never fail to impress and this was no exception.

Super stoked that Chris Stalcup attended this show and gave us a 2 song encore!

First time in Georgia for this band, all the way from Sheridan, Wyoming.  While attendance was lighter than we had hoped, the band brought a ton of energy and made a bunch of new fans.  It would be tough to find a nicer and more gracious group of musicians.  Folks that stuck around after the show were treated to a special after party set.  Our friend Chip Jones, a talented full time musician in his own right, led a fireside jam with all the members of The Two Tracks taking part.   Definitely one of the best fireside jams we’ve ever had on the farm.

He did, and it did not disappoint.  He always puts on a great show and is so funny and engaging.  We wound up taking Justin and Adam on a late night tour of the farm to meet the animals and his commentary on the mule ride through dark unmarked trails was hilarious.

Eric called this tour “Trans American Travelogue” because he was heading up the east coast on motorcycle with nothing but a backpack.  Pono Acres would be his first stop.  He set up his tent, right next to the silo.  The weather was chilly as you can see by Eric’s breath on the videos posted in the Concert gallery.  I don’t think he slept too well and later joked that he would be ditching the tent and staying in hotel rooms after that night.

Eric needed to borrow a guitar and amp.  My long time friend John Davis came through in spades.  Hooking Eric up with his beloved 1965 Fender Strat and Super Reverb.  Eric designed the poster and we brought Darin Back back to take pictures.  As usual, Darin did a phenomenal job on the pictures and video clips we’ve listed in the Concert gallery.

This is the one image I shot in this section on my iPhone. While it kind of looks like a spaceship about to take off, it is Eric’s campsite in front of the silo. You can barely make out his motorcycle..

When Eric posted on social media he was looking for house concerts, I immediately replied with interest.  Eric’s music has been on regular rotation at the Koonin household for years. All four kids are able recite the lyrics to most of his songs.

The day of the show, our area was hit with a winter weather warning. While several areas had a nice cover of white, nothing stuck on the streets and everyone made the show.  This would be the first of three performances by Eric.  While the next two would be outdoors, this show was the start of something special.

First try promoting a concert. Still one of the best performances we've had on that stage. There was an epic fireside jam after the show.  BJ’s friend Donna Hopkins stopped by after her gig and played us a song or two.  Amy brought over a horse and had some of the musicians sing on horseback.  We still try and catch BJ whenever he plays and hope to have him back again soon.

Ramsay Midwood w/ Stewart & Winfield - Shady Grove stage

This was our first show and still is the biggest party we’ve ever had here.  Over 400 people, two food trucks, and two kick ass bands.  It was a weekend long affair with lots of out of town friends and family.  We had a great Friday night performance by Bill and Dan Sheffield.  Bill plays a killer version of Choctaw Bingo. Rain started falling at the start of the song but folks gathered on stage to stay dry. This was also the first poster Perry Brown did for us. Perry went on to design most of the posters in this section as well as the logo for Pono Acres. Photo credits to Ashley Cook Photography..

Seeing this poster on social media made my day. Up until this point, I wasn't completely convinced Ramsay was coming. With a little help from Kevin Russell, Ramsay was able to lock in the other dates to make the tour a realIty.

I hired Stewart & Winfield as the headliner for the big event after Ramsay said it didn’t look likely they would be able to string together enough shows to justify the trip. I first saw S&W years ago when they opened for Jerry Joseph at Smiths Olde Bar. Loved their music so much that we planned a family vacation around one of their Daufuskie Island annual pilgrimages.

After committing to Winfield, Ramsay called back saying we were back on. Amy’s sage advice was, “get them both, you only turn 50 once!”. Stewart & Winfield really was the Winfield Smith band singing the songs of Stewart & Winfield. Winfield had an incredible band and they played a great set. We’ve had Winfield back on a couple different occasions and can't wait to get him back here again.
